Kunde Family Estates Chardonnay, 2011, Sonoma Valley, USA

I first tried a previous vintage of the Kunde Family Estates Chardonnay from the Sonoma Valley about three or four years ago. A Quebec based agency was trying to bring into the province, I can't remember if they were aiming for Private Import or for placement on store shelves. I was really blown away by the taste and value back then, and upon tasting this bottle that I sourced while travelling in Arizona I was happy to say my memory was spot on. Why this wine hasn't made it onto the shelves of the Read more [...]

Kenwood Vineyards Pinot Noir 2010, Russian River Valley, California

I am not a wine drinker who looks for alcohol content on my bottles very often, but when sizing up a Napa Valley or Sonoma County Pinot Noir the alcohol by volume measure usually foreshadows the imminent drink. The 2010 Kenwood Vineyards Pinot Noir from Sonoma's Russian River Valley shows a middle-weight 13.5% which suggest cooler temperature and, in theory, some acidity. I pulled this wine out to match with a steak salad with arugula for greens, drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Read more [...]

USA Vs. Canada Wine Pitched Battle: Château Saint Jean Reserve and Norman Hardie Chardonnay

Château Saint Jean Reserve Chardonnay 2007, Sonoma, California, United States   Norman Hardie Chardonnay 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada   Following the highly entertaining and bizarrely officiated Canada v. USA Olympic Women's soccer semifinal, I have pitted highly reputed Chardonnays from both countries against each other in rematch. I promise to be no more biased than the FIFA appointed ref Christina Pederson, and not allow my true patriot love effect my judgement Read more [...]

Ravenswood 2008 Teldeschi Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma, USA

Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker from the very successful Ravenswood winery has a few things he is proud of. One of them is his winemaking son, Morgan who has started Bedrock Winery. He is also very proud of the 2008 Ravenswood Teldeschi Zinfandel – a single vineyard offering culled from Dry Creek Valley. I had the honour of tasting through a flight of his wines with him and a number of other top Montreal bloggers. You could say he was proud of the more widely distributed Vintner's Blend Chardonnay Read more [...]

Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, United States

Let me start with a slight digression; I wonder how often folks walk up to Martin Scorsese and tell them they love his wine? With that absurdity, I promise I will write the rest of the of this blog without the predictable movie metaphors.   Alright, back to business. The 2010 Francis Ford Coppola Driector's Cut Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma is a great sample of what you want from a Sonoma Cab.   Roasting Cherry scents waft from the glass. The roasting effect isn't smokey per Read more [...]

Valley of the Moon Zinfandel, Sonoma, California

The bottle containing the 2007 Valley of the Moon Zinfandel looks a cross between a painted on porto bottle and an Appalachian moon shine.  No worries, this is not a fortified wine or a product of a home 'still. This Sonoma Hillbilly wine is not, however, a stereotypical punch in the jaw Cali zin.  On the nose it does have fruit notes that you would expect, but they are tempered green veg and leaf fragrances.  The taste experience delivers all the jammed berries you expect with a nice sweetness Read more [...]
