You don’t have to be big and muscular to exude confidence. The Tapiz Malbec is a perfect example of that size may not be the only thing that matters in wine.
I think the idea that Mendoza Malbecs are super testostone, muscle shirt wines is giving way to the truth that Malbecs from Mendoza show a wide variety of styles. This Tapiz Malbec, isn’t muscular, but it certainly needs to be considered fit and trim… and maybe a bit buff.
You get parallel sniffs and tastes with this Tapiz Malbec, ripe fruit and more than average wood and a bit of leather. The wood isn’t over the top but you do notice it, and it ushers in some vanilla notes that complement the wine’s chocolate notes. Also strong backbone from tannins.
So it isn’t big and muscular, nor is it a tiny fellow that suffers from a Napolean complex.. This wine is a lover not fighter.
Musical Match: Not too heavy a rock and roll band, but full of masculine swagger was 80′s rock outfit Loverboy. If not comfortable in leather pants, they certainly wore them lots anyways. Much like the confident attitude of the Tapiz Malbec, a big hit by Loverboy was “Turn Me Loose” Cheers and enjoy!
Special thanks to the Wines of Argentina for providing me transportation, great lodging, amazing food and access to the wonderful wine and winemakers of Mendoza and Cafayate during a promotional tour of Argentina for 10 days in July 2011. This wine was sampled during that promotional tour.
