Melipal Malbec Rosé 2011, Mendoza, Argentina

Melipal has had great success in the United States with their red Malbec by virtue great ratings and great price/quality relationship.  How is the Rosé?  The Melipal Malbec Rosé can best be described as refreshing.

The nose seduces with candied fruit featuring strawberry.  And the gulp flows starting with that berry flavour rolling clean and crisp.  The people at Melipal were very interested to explain to me that this wine is elaborated following white wine methods using 100% early harvest grapes.  I think that we will be hearing the “early harvest” claim more and more.  Without getting into oenology, grapes harvested early will tend to give fresher tasting wines because the chemical composition of the seeds, flesh and skin ferment differently than fully ripened grapes – and the main difference is the acidity shows through.  (use Wikipedia for a more complete explanation)  I think Gary Vaynerchuk has evangelized acidy, fresh, easy drinking wines and consumers are adopting those tastes.  Do not worry, this is not a super acid wine, it keeps things balanced!

Musical Match: The first time I heard Corinne Bailey Rae I was seduced by her almost casual, fresh, open, airy and refreshing voice.  Put Your Records on has been a favourite of mine for a few years now, and I think it grabs the spirit of this wine quite well.  She is graceful, but her voice also carries some wisdom.  Girl get a glass of Melipal Malbec Rosé and then Put Your Records On.

Special thanks to the Wines of Argentina for providing me transportation, great lodging, amazing food and access to the wonderful wine and winemakers of Mendoza and Cafayate during a promotional tour of Argentina for 10 days in July 2011. This wine was sampled during that promotional tour.
