I have been sampling a lot of South African wines recently. This 2010 Western Cape Sauvignon Blanc by Porcupine Ridge has some pretty familiar traits and at least one interesting twist.
Pouring into the glass quite clear, the nose is points more towards flower than the fruit. The fruit comes through stronger in the taste. Typical peach and tropical fruit swim around in with something new: instead of a chalky effect when the wine is low on acid, the wine showed a farinaceous background that mixed with the a hint of caramel to reveal (drum-roll…). Roasted Potatoes. Don’t worry that is just a background effect, not dominating in any way.
Musical Match: Soft, fruity and flaky like good roasted potatoes is folk crooner Rufus Wainwright. His song California is all flowers and tropical is a great match for the Porcupine Ridge Sauvignon Blanc.
