Montes Alpha Syrah, Colchagua Valley, Chile

I picked up this bottle of 2008 Montes Alpha Syrah after I had asked the wine salesperson for a juicy Syrah.  What I got was a fairly juicy Syrah at a good price, around 15$.  Attractive fragrance of the usual Syrah suspects with tasteful wood.  The gulp was bright and and ripe, balanced with good dry characteristics.  French Inspired.

Montes likes to make refined wines, and the Alpha range is a cut above their entry level product.  Their style lends themselves to being big and round, but not bloated and belligerent. I was a little surprised when the salesperson reached for a Montes product when I had requested juicy. With this success this is  definitely a cue to try some of the other wines in the Alpha range.

Musical Match: Carmen’s French roots are showing…. Bizet’s Carmen interpreted by Mezzo Soprano Julie Nesrallah, she brings some juice to soften the dry, crisp tones of the piano accompaniment.  Habenera is a very well known aria, and Syrah is a well known grape variety, and this wine and vocal performance show that even the familiar can be bent slightly and something new and enjoyable are the results.
