From the pouring of the 2007 Kenwood Sonoma Series Zinfandel my interest was piqued. The wine didn’t have the uniform darkness that wine makers seem to concoct with all reds released onto the market. Some caramel brown was mixed in colour spectrum for a little vino-diversity.
I smelled a mix of earth, alcohol and fruit compote. The wine opened up round like a glazed berry tartlet. Nice and juicy, with a modest pepper finish.
This is the second Kenwood product I have tasted in a while (see Yulupa Cabernet Sauvignon) and I have to say I appreciate their style of wine making. This Sonoma Series Zin is a more refined wine than the entry level Yulupa, and they delivered a Zinfandel here that is doesn’t require a boxing license – so you don’t have to fear that it will punch you in teeth some other California zins.
Musical Match: This is a real uptempo wine, that grooves sweet and slick in a sophisticated package.Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers delivers just that groove with Moanin’. Cheers.
