Dark. Heavy. Burning. Montes Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere 2008, and Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon come racing out at you. The wine itself could shame most Malbecs in terms of not letting any light through. But the heat and the fire come from within. The wine has a great leathery scent , it reminds me of the smell of a brand new baseball glove. Taste wise, it is 70/30 split between the Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere – but the Carmenere is where it gets its spiciness. My bottle showed some apricot flavour. I found myself surprised at how quickly the flavour burst and then disappeared as quickly – it really doesn’t linger in your mouth for long.
Musically the Kings Of Leon have that youthful exuberance, male driven expressions of burning passion that you would love to see instilled in any winemaker producing a ballsy combination. The chopping sound of the guitars and the efficient rhythm section mimic the way that this full bodied wine lights a fire in your mouth, fans the flames and then blows out of town. These two grapes are lovers in a dangerous time.
